Forgotten But Unbroken - Available now!
Nov 18, 2024To help you get off to a flying start here are some tips that will aid you in your survival and help you get to through your first winter.
Tips For Surviving the Winter
Stay out of Sight
In many missions your soldiers will not have been noticed. Carefully scout the area, take note of patrol patterns. Move into the red squares that represent the enemy’s cone of view and your soldier and potentially your entire squad will be spotted as the enemy is aware of your presence.
You can creep up on enemies within the yellow squares depending on their awareness level you will be able to take them out quietly with knife (providing you have one equipped). Be careful where the body drops, because enemies will be alerted if they find the bodies of their compatriots.
Radio for Assistance
Once you have set up camp, it never hurts to ask for assistance from your allies. The worst they can do is say no. You miss 100% of the support you don’t ask for. The frequency of support calls comes down to the level of your radio operator. Keep track of the next time you can call support by clicking on the “Time” icon on the bottom left.
Keep a soldier on the radio as much as possible, as this will also reveal more information and intel about upcoming missions.
Expeditions
Expeditions are another good way to maintain wood and food supplies for your camp. Not every expedition will be successful and during the winter these expeditions become far too risky to attempt. Keep an eye on the timer at the bottom left to see when your next expedition can be launched.
Camp Build Order
Think about your priorities for survival and build in the order that makes sense to support that survival.
A medical tent and its upgrades will ensure you can heal characters after battles and will effectively bring those soldiers back to health if they catch the flu. A Kitchen will help you effectively ration food.
A radio tent and its upgrades will help you call for assistance. A weaponsmith will fix your weapons after battle.
Pass the Ammunition
If your soldiers are close to each other in battle they can trade items between one another. This can come in handy if a soldier picks up an item they can’t use, or if another soldier simply requires more ammunition.
Steady your Aim
The default chance of successfully shooting an enemy can be increased by clicking on the right mouse button once you have selected your target. It will sacrifice some AP, so if you are planning a quick getaway after taking that shot, you might need to weigh up the advantages.
Grenades Bounce
Take advantage of the way a grenade will bounce of elements in the environment to hit a target that may otherwise be out of reach. You can adjust the throwing arc of the grenade by holding ALT and scrolling the mouse wheel. Get creative and get out of trouble.
Loot the Battlefield
By pressing the ALT key, you will highlight loot that on the battlefield. Whilst some loot is placed can be found in chests and cupboards, you will also find that you can also scavenge from fallen enemies. When you complete your objective, you will leave the battlefield, so be sure to loot the battlefield before you do.
Autosave has your back
Forget to save and your strategy is now in pieces? The start of your last three turns is auto-saved so you can go back and try a different strategy.
Morale
Your soldier’s effectiveness is also based on their morale. Be sure you can facilitate their needs. Do your best to keep them fed, healthy and warm in winter. Bonus tip - upgrading the HQ so your soldiers have access to toilets and showers will help lift their spirits.
Weapon Mastery, Perks, Attributes and Skills
As a soldier uses a weapon, they become more proficient using it. If you find yourself focusing on taking down the enemy by sneaking up on them and knifing them in the back, you may want to build a shooting range where your soldiers can increase their weapon skill outside of combat. Using the range will cost you ammunition, but you can always ask for war supplies from your allies or trade with the spy network – though the spy network will charge you for each visit, they often bring some supplies with them to compensate.
As your soldiers’ gain experience, they will increase in level and be able to choose perks and spend attribute points to improve their strength, dexterity, intelligence and endurance.
Skills will improve passively over time as your soldier engages in actions. Shooting, Snipe, Melee, Burst, Medicine and Explosions are all skills that your soldiers can gain during a battle. Having different soldiers specialise in each of these things can help them operate more effectively as a unit.
Good Luck out there and we can't wait to see you at the other side of the campaign!
